December 04, 2023
The agreement was signed by the Director of Operations & Production of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Suhedi and the Director of Coal Plant Operations of PLN NP Rahmanoe Indarto at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP 28 in Dubai, Thursday, November 30, 2023.
The MOU signing was witnessed by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Ad Interim Erick Thohir, President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo and President Director of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Arsal Ismail.
"I'd like to thank everyone who has pledged to work together to make Indonesia a more environmentally friendly place," said Erick Thohir.
PT PLN (Persero) President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that PLN had been utilizing FABA, a waste material, as an alternative source of raw materials. This was in line with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values, representing global commitment to improving the economic welfare of society while preserving the environment.
"As a state-owned enterprise, we understand completely how important it is that all business actors, particularly those in the industry, have the same vision for preserving the environment. We will continue to improve synergy to support the government's efforts to protect the environment for a better future for the next generation," said Darmawan.
Meanwhile, PTBA President Director Arsal Ismail stated that his organization always implements good mining practices (Good Mining Practice) through various initiatives and programs. The synergy with PLN was expected to support the achievement of the government’s Net Zero Emission target in 2060 or earlier.
"The synergy between state-owned enterprises demonstrates Indonesia's commitment to achieving the Net Zero Emissions target. It is also in line with PTBA's vision of becoming a world-class energy company that cares about the environment. We hope that this collaboration will benefit the environment and society," he said.
According to PTBA Operations and Production Director Suhedi, this collaboration is mutually beneficial in which fly ash and bottom ash are used as NAF (Non Acid Forming) materials to neutralize acid water in ex-mining areas.
FABA which is alkaline in nature is able to prevent the formation of acid mine drainage from PAF (Potentially Acid Forming) material. The potential absorption of FABA from Bukit Asam Power Plant 4x65 MW during the three year utilization period reaches 400 thousand tons.
"FABA will reduce the use of natural resources, thus supporting the concept of sustainable development which emphasizes environmental sustainability," he said.
