Bukit Asam (PTBA) and UGM Collaborate to Increase the Added Value of Coal

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM) have agreed to collaborate on educational, training, consultancy, and research projects.

The scope of this collaboration includes the development of Human Resources (HR), technology development and utilization of coal, with the goal of increasing the added value of coal and strengthening energy security and domestic industry.

The cooperation agreement is stated in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the President Director of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Arsal Ismail and the Deputy Chancellor for Planning, Assets and Information Systems UGM Arief Setiawan Budi Nugroho at the UGM Faculty of Engineering, Yogyakarta, on Friday, September 15, 2023.

According to Arsal Ismail regarding this collaboration, PTBA is transforming towards becoming a world-class energy company that cares about the environment. The company also supports Government policies that encourage increased added value, thus, innovation is needed in technology and coal utilization.

"Collaboration with UGM in developing technology and utilizing coal is very important to strengthen energy security and create a sustainable business. Universities support can help PT Bukit Asam Tbk successfully transform into a world-class energy company that cares about the environment," said Arsal.

On the same occasion, UGM Deputy Chancellor for Planning, Assets and Information Systems Arief Setiawan Budi Nugroho expressed his gratitude for PTBA's trust in choosing UGM as one of its partners in the fields of research, consultation, policy preparation and studies.

With PT Bukit Asam Tbk’a trust, he hopes that his institution will be able to apply its knowledge and study findings for scientific development, especially in the mineral and coal industry, which can provide added value to mining products.

"We don't want a research university whose results are merely publications, but those that can be applied and are benefit the country," he said.
